Professor Thomas Kwasi Tieku is a Professor of Politics and International Relations at King’s University College at Western University. He was inspired to get involved in the Positively Black in Southwestern Ontario project because of the opportunity to bring his social justice and equity work abroad back home to Canada. He felt he could apply his international and political insights to this project and collaborate with other researchers to address the systemic barriers Black youth face in Ontario.
Professor Tieku is interested in dismantling systemic barriers anywhere and everywhere in the world that serve as a cause associated with Black youth. He is invested in the fight against systemic barriers that Black boys face particularly in Ontario’s elementary and high schools. His dedication to social justice and equity drives him to address these issues and advocate for the betterment of Black youth.
In addition, his extensive role and career experiences will significantly shape this project by leveraging his understanding of government, public administration, and bureaucracies. As the President of the Ghanaian Association of London and Middlesex, he can open doors within the Ghanaian community for the research team which will be invaluable to the project.
Professor Tieku looks forward to seeing how the research results can be leveraged to bring about concrete and positive change in the lives of Black youth. He hopes that those in positions of power will use the findings to enhance the lived experiences of Black youth in Ontario. Again, he hopes that the research will help create a more equitable and supportive environment for Black youth in the region.
